The symposium organisers are pleased to welcome Martin Khor on 21 May and Rajagopal P. V., Jeffrey Sachs and Laurence Tubiana on 22 May for the congress in Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL). There will be simultaneous translation available (french and english).
A member of the United Nations Committee on Development Policy, Malaysian born Martin Khor has been the Executive Director of the South Centre since 2009. Former Director of the Third World Network, he is an economist, journalist and is active in the civil society movement. A member of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Task Force on Environment and Human Settlements he has taken part in a great number of working groups and international councils including the Helsinki Process on Globalisation and Democracy, the Commonwealth Expert Group on Democracy and Development and sits on the board of the International Forum on Globalization. Columnist and author of numerous works, Martin Khor studied economics at Cambridge University (UK) and the Universiti Sains Malaysia where he would go on to become a lecturer.
Described by New Internationalist magazine as “India’s mass mobilizer”, human rights activist Rajagopal P.V. is vice chairman of the Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi. He is also the president and founding member of Ekta Parishad, a movement consisting of approximately 11,000 community based organizations, dedicated to helping India’s poor gain control over livelihood resources. In line with the Ghandi Peace Foundation its principles include non-violence, community-based governance, local self-reliance and responsible government.
In 2012, following a ‘March for Justice’ he reached a 10 point agreement with India’s Minister for Rural Development, Jairam Ramesh, based on issues such as land reform, women’s empowerment in the context of sustainable development and the need for a transition from large-scale industrial development to a more rural economy.
Twice named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World", Jeffrey D. Sachs is an American economist and an internationally renowned expert in economic development and poverty alleviation. He is Director, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development and Professor of Health Policy and Management at The Earth Institute, Columbia University. Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, having held the same position for his predecessor Kofi Annan, Sachs has advised Heads of state and Governments around the world for over 25 years. In addition to holding various positions, such as Chief Strategist and co-founder of the Millennium Promise Alliance, he has authored three New York Times bestsellers The End of Poverty (2005), Common Wealth (2008), and The Price of Civilization (2011) and, more recently, To Move the World: JFK’s Quest for Peace (2013).
Former Senior Advisor on environmental issues to French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin and member of the French Council of Economic Analysis, Laurence Tubiana is the founder of the Institute of Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) in Paris. She is Ambassador for climate change and special representative for the COP21. She is a Professor and Director of the Sustainable Development Centre at Sciences Po Paris and Professor of International Affairs at Columbia University. Since 2012, she has been part of the French National Steering Committee on Energy Transition and co-chair of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)’s Leadership Council and working group on Deep Decarbonisation Pathways. Author of various books and publications on the environment she is the founder of the journal ‘Le Courrier de la Planète’ and co-directs the annual review.
